Responsibilities include:

  • Manage the applied research team and their work agenda, assisting the Technical Director and Vice-President of Marketing and Technology in the proposal and prioritization of technology projects and resources to ensure sustainable innovation
  • Implement applied research projects redirecting resources as necessary in order to maximize the return to the company’s investment on advanced research
  • Provide managerial direction and close technical support (including bench work) to the applied research team, ensuring that projects remain relevant to the product line teams and delivered in a timely fashion.
  • Stay abreast of new materials, processes, and application screening techniques as part of the development of new technologies
  • Collaborate with the Technical Director in budgeting and administrative functions related to applied research
  • Facilitate and enhance communication between the applied research team and the product line and operations groups globally
  • Maintain a professional, safe working environment conducive to productive, effective, and innovative technology and process development
  • Travel as necessary both domestically and internationally

Previous work experience, educational background, and qualifications should consist of:

  • M.S. degree in Chemistry; Ph.D. preferred. At least 10 years relevant industry experience
  • Demonstrated ability to manage, motivate, and develop people; experience with managing a research team required
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; must be able to work with people of varying skill levels and educational or vocational backgrounds
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written. Must be able to express complex technical issues well to both the expert and the novice
  • Understanding of silicone, surfactant, wax and oil chemistry preferred
  • Good computer skills and proficiency in Lotus Notes and Microsoft Office preferred

In the United States, Chem-Trend’s main location is Howell, Michigan where we have two manufacturing facilities, R & D and Technical Service laboratories, and our Global and North American Regional Headquarters. However, additional Chem-Trend employees also work across the country, mainly in sales or technical service roles.

The cities of Ann Arbor and Lansing, each home to a Big Ten university, offer a broad selection of music, dance, theater, and cinema. Travel to the many Michigan port cities on more than 3000 miles of coastline to visit beautiful historic lighthouses and maritime museums.

Colleges and Universities: Michigan is home to over 400 colleges, universities, technical, and vocational schools, many having consistently earned high grades from reviewers. The University of Michigan's main campus in Ann Arbor is one of the top-ranked public universities in the world. Michigan also boasts many fine small colleges as well.
