Conventional Release Systems for Specialized Applications

Conventional mold release technology is used where the release task requires more “lubrication”, and where this parameter outweighs that of other release related aspects. Conventional mold release products used in composites applications have become the exception, rather than the rule and are used mostly where high slip is the prime attribute required. These products are deliberately designed to be mobile, and should be expected to transfer to the molded part.

Any application that involves building a tube-like structure, where the composite would shrink tightly onto a mandrel, would need a conventional product. Tube structures range in design from those as small as fishing rods to ones as large as septic tanks. The technique used in making these structures would normally be filament winding, which relies upon the release agent to prevent the resins that bind the filaments together from sticking to the forming mandrel. Once the whole construction has formed and cured, the release agent must provide sufficient lubrication to allow the part to slide off the mandrel easily so that the structure remains dimensionally correct and its strength does not become compromised.

Conventional release systems have become only a small component of the release system choices available in modern composite molding operations.
